eBay Find of the Day: 1997 Ford Escort Cosworth Rally Car
Posted by: | CommentsFiled under: Auctions, Ford, Racing
Long before the Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru Impreza came to prominence in the world of rallying, the Ford Escort often dominated the world’s backwoods trails. Today’s eBay Find of the Day is one of the last of the line before Ford retired the Escort nameplate after nearly three decades.
This 1997 Escort Cosworth did okay, but it really wasn’t one of the more successful in the line. It first competed in 1997 and ran until 2006, when it was used in the X-Games rally competition. The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four produces over 300 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque. The car currently has a seven-speed FFD gearbox installed, but the original six-speed unit is included in the deal, as is an extra engine and numerous other spares. The starting point is $60,000, and there were no bids on the car as of this writing.

The fate of small pickup trucks in America is rather shaky. There haven’t been any major new entries into the segment as of late (save the Suzuki Equator, of course, even though it’s not much more than a rebadged Nissan Frontier). And though we’ve spied Ford Ranger prototypes testing abroad, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a new model is slated for U.S. consumption. Small trucks do well in other markets, and the trucklets seem to be a dying trend here in the States.
Today, though, our spies have not only caught a new Ranger mule (above), but a small GM pickup (right) – the replacement for the aging Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins. Both mules look a bit larger than the models currently on the road, though still more manageable than the top-dog F-150 and Silverado.
Still, though, it’s unclear what the future has in store for these new trucks. The fact that Ford and GM are testing these new mini-pickups in and around their respective headquarters in southeast Michigan leads us to believe that there may, in fact, be U.S.-spec replacements in the works. Ford has often spoke of a smaller F-100-style F-150 to replace the Ranger, and reports have shown that GM is working on a new truck to hopefully rekindle the success that the original Chevy S10 and GMC Sonoma had.

Spy Shots: 2011 Ford Mondeo coming with 2.0L Ecoboost

The Ford Mondeo is due for a mid-cycle refresh for the 2011 model year and all signs point to a debut at the Paris Motor Show this September. But ahead of its big reveal, spy photographers have caught the new Mondeo out in the open, and while the basic shape hasn’t changed, there’s something far more interesting under the hood.
The major stylistic upgrades are up front, where the Mondeo’s fascia picks up a few cues from the Fiesta and the 2012 Focus, including a larger lower grille and slimmer upper section. The front foglamps have been re-shaped and a strip of LED running lamps tie the design into Ford’s B-segment hatch.
At the back, the tailgate gets a subtle re-shaping above the license plate pocket and it appears the lights have been modified under the camo tape. The most important changes will be in the engine compartment, where the Mondeo will get the new 2.0-liter Ecoboost inline-four and the Powershift dual-clutch transmission. Expect all the details to be revealed shortly ahead of the Paris show this fall.
