Classic Ford Automobiles
Since Ford Motor Company began building cars in the early 1900’s, many classics have been produced by the company. From the very first Model T to roll of the newly designed assembly line, Ford automobiles were a classic in the making. With a number of models produced over the years, from trucks and cars, so muscle cars and convertibles, Ford is an American icon that has created some of the most collectible classic cars that are sought after today.
Ford Mustang
No discussion of classic American cars would be complete without talking about the Ford Mustang. This icon of automotive history has been in production since March of 1964. As Ford’s second longest running car, the Mustang has been through quite an evolution over the years. The first generation Mustang was in production for about a decade from the 1960’s to the 1970’s and it was an immediate success, far exceeding any expectations that Ford ever had for the car. Today the first generation of Ford Mustang is in much demand. Compared to today’s cars it was relatively powerless, with just a 101hp engine, but still these classic Ford Mustangs are a hot collectors item. With other model changes over the years, Mustangs suffered from poor design more than once, but today have been redesigned to look much like the originals.
Ford Galaxie
The Ford Galaxie is a classic built by Ford for 15 years, from 1959 to 1974. While some were built has plain family cars, many were created as high performance muscle cars, to rival the popular Chevrolet Impala. One of the more unique models was the Skyliner, which included a retractable hard top that folded down into the trunk, which is a fairly common design element today. Unfortunately this model only lasted two years before being phased out. The early 1960’s saw some changes to the Galaxie which would see them lose their tail fins, which made them quite distinct. A high powered 6.4L engine was offered which was rated at over 400hp, making it a real contender in the muscle car market. Over the years this car saw a number of design and mechanical changes, until it was finally phased out of production in 1974.
Ford Fairlane
Yet another classic made by Ford Motor Company, the Ford Fairlane was in production from 1955 all the way until 1971. The car was named after Henry Ford’s home, Fair Lane, which was in Dearborn, Michigan. The Ford Fairlane name has been used on a number of models in a number of classes, so it’s hard to say that the Ford Fairlane was just one type of car. The name seemed to bounce around to a number of different cars over the years, from a mid-sized car, 2 door coupe, 2 door convertible, 4 door sedan and 4 door station wagon. Early on in its life it was the premiere full size car in the Ford lineup and a number of beautiful example of the Ford Fairlane are now sought after by collectors today. The 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria is a wonderful example of this classic before it was moved a more mid-sized intermediate car within Ford’s lineup.
Ford Motor Company has made so many classics that it’s hard to write about just a few of them. With such a long history, it’s nearly impossible to begin to describe the impact that these cars have made on the American automotive industry.
