Ford Edge
Ever since the SUV craze of the 1990’s, consumers have enjoyed spacious vehicles that are functional for everyday use by families. The design of the SUV lacked one thing though; Fuel efficiency. In the past 5 years we’ve seen a tremendous effort among automakers to build more fuel efficient vehicles which lead to the design of a new class of vehicle referred to as a crossover. These vehicles resume SUV’s to some extent, but share many platform parts with cars, making them more fuel efficient.
The Ford Edge is one of the first Crossover vehicles made by Ford in 2006 with a platform shared among a few other Crossovers and some of Ford’s sedans. Made in Oakville Ontario, the Ford Edge is considered a mid-size vehicle with 5 doors and seating for 5 people. The Ford Edge has been targeted toward those who enjoy the functionality of both a minivan and an SUV in one vehicle, and it’s design features the three bar chrome grille that is included with Ford’s new designs.
The Ford Edge is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and includes a smooth 6 speed transmission. Available in both an all wheel drive model and a front wheel drive, the Ford Edge gets about 24 mpg in highway driving, which is excellent for a vehicle of it’s size.
A number of trim levels are available including an SE, SEL and Limited editions which feature a number of options. Even in its most basic form, the Ford Edge is equipped with such features as Air Conditioning, Cruise Control, Tilt Steering, Power Windows and Power Locks.
2009 was an exciting model year for the Ford Edge when a Ford Edge Sport was added to the lineup. This new model included features that took the Ford Edge and made it much sportier with body-colored trim, 20 inch wheels and there’s even an option for 22 inch wheels. The Ford Edge Sport is a beautiful Crossover that makes quite an impression when spotted on the road.
The Ford Edge has made a positive impression on the automotive world, causing other manufacturers to take note. When they were first introduced sales of the Edge were brisk and soon they were seeing over 100,000 units per year being sold which makes them one of the best selling mid-size SUV’s/Crossovers in the U.S.
When Ford announced that it would start building more car-based products rather than the truck-based models that had been so popular for over a decade it was a big gamble. Without knowing how customers would respond to this new class of vehicles, Ford has certainly walked away a winner with the Ford Edge. Not only is it attractive, but it’s also functional, reasonably priced and overall a great vehicle for those in the market for a new car. Whether you need a family hauler, a weekend cruiser or a sporty vehicle the Ford Edge has managed to appeal to a number of different markets with this diverse vehicle.
