Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is one of the vehicles that helped Ford during the golden SUV years of the 1990’s and early 2000’s. It was first introduced to the North American market in 1991 as a replacement for the Ford Bronco and helped consumers to realize that SUV’s didn’t just have to be for off-roading and that they could be a great family car.
When first produced, there were two versions, the four-door, and the two-door Sport, which also had a wheel-base that was almost a foot shorter. It was powered by a 155hp 4.0L V6 engine and both five-speed manual and four-speed automatic was offered. You could also get it in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, and shift-on-the-fly was invented to go from two-wheel to four-wheel drive at any speed. There were a few different trim levels available including the XL (base model), XLT, the popular Eddie Bauer, and even more upscale Limited. The Limited offered some great features including a new grille, roof console which included an outdoor thermometer and compass, as well as automatic headlights.
At first glance, the style of the Explorer really hasn’t changed very much, with its corners being rounded off a bit, but it still has some great features suited to the adventurer or family man. It has a bigger 4.0L V6 engine that gets 210hp with standard five-speed automatic transmission. If you need more power, a V8 292hp engine is available. This is great if you are looking to do a lot of towing, and Ford even offers a Towing package that includes the V8 engine, sway control and it can pull almost 7300 lbs.
The interior has some well thought out options including the newer voice-activated navigation system that is paired with Ford Sync. This navigational system contains a large 10GB hard drive so you can store pictures, MP3s or even rip a CD onto the hard drive. You can even watch movies with this system. There is also a patented safety feature called SmartAlert which links you with a command center so that you can always keep track of where your Explorer is, even if you are far away. They can lock or unlock your doors remotely and will even alert you if you have teenagers and they have gone over the maximum speed limit which you can pre-set.
You can always maintain the perfect temperature with the two zone auto temperature control and heated leather seats.
The 2009 Explorer is offered in three different seat configurations, from five to seven passengers, and on the Limited and Eddie Bauer packages, a power back row is available as well as climate control for the rear seats. Also with the Limited edition, there are stylish chrome accents on the roof rails, step bars, 18” wheels, 4 bar grille and side mirrors. The leather seats, with 10 directional driver seat settings, as well as power lumbar support, and woodgrain interior make you feel more like you’re sitting in your living room, than rush hour traffic.
