Ford Ranger
The name Ranger has manifested itself in a couple of different forms before it was applied to the small pick-up truck introduced to the North American market in 1983. Originally it was applied in the 1950’s and 1960’s to versions of Ford full-size trucks and then as we know it today. It was the best selling small truck in the United States for seventeen years, starting in 1987 and is built on the same platform as the Mazda B-Series pickup.
When the Ranger concept first entered Ford’s designer’s minds in the mid-1970’s, with the intention of creating an economical version of their full-size pick-up, but that would have the same capabilities. In fact, even though the box was obviously smaller than the F-Series, it was still designed to haul a four foot wide sheet of plywood.
When released, there were many different engines available ranging from 59hp to 115hp. In 1986, the Supercab became available which added almost a foot and a half of space behind the driver’s seat, and jump seats became an option to transport passengers for short distances.
Since that time, the Ranger has been redesigned a few times, each time becoming more aerodynamic and modern. They came out with sportier models such as the Splash package which included aluminum wheels, flares and fancy paint colors, and later lowered suspension.
The 2009 Ford Ranger is sleeker looking than ever before but is still functional and practical as a compact pick-up truck. It’s also very economical as it gets 26mpg on the highway. It can also tow up to 6000 lbs and comes with front tow hooks so its great for work or recreation. It is extremely durable with its heavy-duty shocks and suspension made to handle off-road travel, as well as a solid steel frame. Additionally, if you need extra box space, the Ranger is the only one in its class to offer 43.6 cubic feet on its XL and XLT Regular cab models.
If you are the type of person who doesn’t need a truck for work, but just likes how you look and feel in a truck, then the Ranger XLT might be for you with styling accents such as body color bumpers and chrome grille.
If you are looking for even more style, check out the Ford Ranger Sport with its black slat grille, body colour door handles and side mirror, and black step bars on the Super Cab. It comes in the 4×2 or 4×4 model, with 16″ spoke aluminum wheels.
If action plus style interests you, the FX4 Off-Road Ford Ranger comes with rugged gas shocks, 4.0L V6 engine and rear differential that has limited slip. All that is combined with certain niceties such as cruise control, power mirrors, bucket seats and leather wrapped steering wheel with tilt.
Whichever Ranger you choose, it is a good melding of practicality and fun that has stood the test of time. It’s also a great choice if you need a truck, but one that is economical.
