Ford Taurus
The Ford Taurus is Ford’s fourth longest running model, as it has been in production since 1986. When first manufactured, it was considered a mid-sized, front-wheel drive vehicle, but is now considered full-size and is available in front or all wheel drive.
When the Taurus was first introduced to the North American consumer, it was considered to be very influential in terms of features and design. Most in the industry see the advent of the Taurus as being a milestone within the automobile sector.
Not only was the Ford Taurus the fourth longest running model, it is the fifth best seller of all Ford’s and between the year of 1992 and 1996 was the best selling car in the United States.
As the Japanese models hit the North American marketplace in full force during the mid-1990’s, the Taurus lost market share as sales declined and Ford concentrated on the hot SUV and truck markets. It was unfortunate as the Taurus went through very few, and boring design changes, making it only really popular with the rental car markets. The first incarnation of Taurus was discontinued with 2007 being the last model year, being replaced by the Fusion and Five Hundred. With dismal sales of the Five Hundred and the Freestyle crossover, Ford decided to re-badge these vehicles as the Taurus and Taurus X, respectively, thinking that the strong Taurus name association would be good for marketing. It didn’t really help either in terms of sales numbers as the Taurus X ceased production early in 2009, but Ford has decided to kick the Taurus brand up a notch once again, with the much anticipated release of the totally redesigned 2010 Ford Taurus.
The 2008 and 2009 Taurus had a great number of changes from its Five Hundred predecessor – almost 500 in total. Some of the most noticeable changes include the restyled front end which includes the now recognizable Ford bar grill and new, more powerful engine, which went from a 203hp 3.0L V6 to a 263hp 3.5L V6. The torque was also increased to handle a larger engine. Its six-speed automatic transmission smoothly shifts, and offers up to 28 mpg on the highway, which means you can go approximately five hundred miles on one tank.
Its front and rear suspension is designed for a great ride, even over the bumpiest of roads, and hugs corners tightly.
It also has some great safety features such as side curtain airbags and sensors which detect a rollover or crash sensors in the doors. Its side pillars have been welded in a way that the force from a crash is redirected under the seats and away from the passengers. It also comes with traction control, anti-lock brakes and a monitoring system that tracks tire pressure.
The interior of the Ford Taurus is both large and luxurious with plenty of space that can comfortably accommodate five adults. The Limited edition also has a memory so it will remember each drivers perfect seat, side mirror and even pedal positions, so you can just get in a drive instead of fiddling with the settings.
Other thoughtful options in the Taurus is air vents in the back to keep rear passengers comfortable and rear window sunshade to make for a cooler interior on those hot days. For cold days, the front seats offer two heat settings in the seats to keep you and your passenger toasty warm.
