Fox Body Ford Mustang (1979 to 1993)
The Fox Body Ford Mustang is known as Ford’s third generation Mustang. Some may also say that it was the dark period of styling during Mustang’s history. It was produced in Ford’s hometown of Dearborn, Michigan between 1979 and 1993. It was called the Fox Body Mustang because it was built on the Fox platform which was rear drive and uni-body. It was designed to be lighter weight and originally showed in the compact car category. This platform first appeared on the Ford Fairmont in 1978, but many other models beside the Mustang were built on it including the Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln Continental.
The Fox Body Mustang was available in three different body styles including the 2-door coupe and convertible as well as a three door hatchback. When released in 1979, not only the exterior was completely redesigned, but the interior was as well. Even though it had a smaller back seat, it could seat rear passengers comfortably, with the trade-off being a larger trunk.
Even though this model of Mustang was larger than its predecessor, it was considerably lighter, which was better for fuel economy. Making an economical vehicle was at the forefront of Ford’s mind because of the oil crisis of the early 1980’s. It offered different engine sizes including a 2.3L 88hp engine and two 2.8L sizes, one at 109hp and at 140hp. These three had previously been used in the previous Mustang II model. Ford quickly replaced the 2.8L engines with a peppier 2.3L turbo motor which gave similar horsepower as a V8, but had only four cylinders. They also came out with a 5.0L V8 which offered 134hp. Because of this, the Fox Body Mustang became a pace car for the Indy 500. There were only 11,000 replicas made of the Mustang pace car in colors of pewter and orange. Since there were only a limited number of the pace cars made, they have become desirable with collectors.
It would be five years before the third generation of Mustang would get a facelift. In 1983, the vehicle was modernized and given a more aerodynamic front end, new grille and taillights. The convertible was also reintroduced to the Mustang family after having been absent for over ten years. There trimmed down their trim lines and only offered the L, LX, GT and Turbo GT which was able to get up to 175hp. This was also the time of Mustang’s twentieth anniversary and Ford introduced the limited edition GT350, of which 5100 were made, all in white with red interior.
The Mustang SVO was introduced at this time and offered great handling and a sporty appearance with 16” wheels and SVO spoiler, plus, by the end of its run in 1986 came with a 200hp engine.
The Mustang was again redesigned in 1987 partly due to a slump in sales and now was only offered in LX or GT trim levels. It is these model years that are still seen on the road today.
